Did you miss me? I know, I know I missed you too, MacLaren's ELT Pub regulars. Let me keep the longing part short and explain why I am here today.
I will tell the story of how I had the chance to talk to a person who I wondered how he thinks and acts in my head. Even though the conversation did not go as I wanted, the idea of having a conversation with Emil M. Cioran, one of the greatest nihilist philosophers of the 20th century, excited me.
I asked Magic School's Character Chatbot to simulate a conversation with Cioran. After asking about 10 questions, I wrote a report about this conversation and used Magic School's feedback tool to get feedback and reorganize my report.
I must admit that the conversation did not go beyond the superficial rephrasing of Cioran's thoughts. The lack of semantic depth made philosophical topics lose their meaning. It was more useful when talking about his life and books. Chatbot was especially careful not to comment and close the topic quickly so as not to affect me badly when I brought up the subject of suicide and Hitler. It was polite, careful, and emotionally distant—basically like every bad date I’ve ever had.
Although it is a good thing so that young children are not affected, it was one of the things that killed the chat by being so careful despite me stating that it was a university level while creating the chatbot. I do not think that AI can help in such matters unless it can really think and make its own decisions and establish its own logic. It can be a great tool for young children when used without deepening into question and answer.
As for feedback, it definitely analyzes the text beautifully and tells you what you need to do to improve the text as a pinpoint. However, since it does not directly tell you what to do, it pushes you to think and encourages you to do it. For this reason, I can say that it gives really good feedback.
My dear Bro Cioran... I have no other chance than meeting Cioran in nothingness, where our ideas dance in harmony.
-My dear regulars, no AI is deeper than your BRO's intelligence.
